It's officially the most beautiful time of the year for Muslims all around the world. It's the month of Ramadan!
For my Muslim friends who landed here, you probably did so while looking for Ramadan and Eid books.
Like me, you're probably looking for ways to help make Ramadan special for your kids. And also like me, you dream of shelves decorated with beautiful and colorful stories for Ramadan and Eid to help your children ring in the spirit of this holy month in a child-friendly way.
The other benefit is that they're also reading more. Personally, I find my kids reading their Ramadan and Eid books all the time during the month of Ramadan. I'll catch them in the mornings before school, after homework in the evenings, before bed, and sometimes will even have to dig the books out of one of my little hoarders' bedroom because she needs them next to her.
These book suggestions are that good. They're tried and tested, my kids' favorites, and I went through quite a few book returns before I settled on this short little list.
As a bonus for you, I share the age group and reading level I feel each book is geared for. This comes from my own elementary teaching experience, and is what I use to gauge books for my own kids reading levels.
Keep reading for a list of our favorite Ramadan and Eid books!
The following post shares ten of my family's favorite books for ramadan and eid.
My Top Picks for Kids books for Ramadan and Eid
This book holds a very special place in my heart.
It's the very first Ramadan book I ever bought for my eldest daughter when she was just three years old. And boy, did we read every single word together nightly for many Ramadan months over the years!
The Curious George series is a classic children's book series. So as a former teacher, this was a very exciting find because everybody knows Curious George!
I remember the day I saw this book in publication. I was floored, feeling so excited that a mainstream children's series was finally acknowledging Ramadan and wishing it had been around when I was a kid. I envisioned my own teachers reading it to my class, and thought about how with popular and classic series like this discussing Ramadan, I could do less explaining to my non-Muslims friends.
It's Ramadan, Curious George is about George and his friend, the man with the yellow hat, celebrating Ramadan with their Muslim friends.
Reading Level and Age Group
I'd recommend this book for toddlers-early readers. It's a board book so it's perfect for tiny hands. But I do also find that even older readers will enjoy reading it for nostalgia's sake.
As a testament, we've had our copy for almost eight years now, and not only is it still going strong, but I'll still find my almost-middle-schooler picking it up happily.
Speaking of Board Books, allow me to introduce you to the cutest Ramadan Board Book on the internet, adorably titled "Baby's First Ramadan".
Just like how it sounds, it's a book for babies and toddlers, introducing them to the basic concepts of Ramadan.
The book itself is only about 4 pages, with each page explaining a concept of Ramadan.
The pictures are phenomenal, and large enough for babies and toddlers to see and touch. They could actually keep little minds entertained for a while staring at the pictures of real families celebrating Ramadan, dates, crescent moon, etc. This is the type of book I would give my babies and toddlers when I want them to be entertained flipping through real photos.
Since it's a board book there's no risk of little hands ripping the pages, which makes it more durable and lasting for years to come.
Age Group and Reading Level
True to it's title, this book would be perfect for babies. It would also be perfect for toddlers, and even early preschoolers. Parents can read this book to their babies and little ones
Under the Ramadan Moon is a book that highlights the moon in Ramadan specifically.
When explaining the concept that the holy month of Ramadan revolves around the lunar cycle, I found this was the hardest thing for my kids to understand. They would ask me questions like what does that even mean? It goes by the cycle of the moon?
The book doesn't go too in-depth about what a lunar cycle is or the science behind it. But it does highlight how the month of Ramadan does involve the moon, and that the moon is a very important aspect. We know this is because it signals the start and end of Ramadan, Eid Al-Fitr, Iftar time, etc. But for young kids this is difficult to understand, other than the moon is an important part of Ramadan.
Reading Level and Age Group
For young children especially, I find this book to be a great introduction to how the moon plays an important role in the timing of Ramadan and all it's features.
While the reading level and age group of this book is for early elementary kids, I would also suggest this book for middle-elementary kids who are just starting to fast. This is because, again, the concept that the moon is such an important part of Ramadan is described beautifully in here, without going into too much overwhelming scientific detail.
This is my most recent Ramadan book find.
And no pun intended, but I'm over the moon about it!
That's because this book uses real life examples to teach what the values and verses in the Quran mean.
There are 30 different values corresponding with 30 different verses. Some of them are about money, charity, feeling content, patience, etc.
While the idea is that one story is read nightly for an entire month (during the month of Ramadan ideally) you could easily skip back and forth, or read and re-read multiple at a time.
Each value uses a verse directly quoted from the Quran to correlate. But the best part is that the real-life example used to teach the value and illustrate the Quranic verse is one relating to kids.
The real-life examples include ones of kids and money, sports practices, classroom examples, friendship, etc. They all come from real moments our kids can actually relate to in their daily lives. This further illustrates the idea that the lessons and values taught in the Quran are meant to be used in our everyday lives.
Age Group and Reading Level
Although this book is marketed s a "Bedtime Stories" book, I wouldn't be deterred into thinking this book is only for younger children.
In fact, this is actually a book for all ages, both due to the content and the actual text.
The text is smaller, making it more difficult for early readers to read independently. Early readers will need this book read to them. But it's perfect for more advanced readers to read independently.
The subject matter also makes the book perfect for all ages. Parents can discuss the value being illustrated in each story with their younger kids, while older kids have the mental capacity to make those connections on their own.
One of my kids' favorite Eid activity books, I've purchased this book twice now for my kids already!
If you're not familiar with Mad Libs, it's a series of fill-in-the-blank activities. It requires kids to use their knowledge of basic grammar, such as knowing what an adjective and/or adverb are. The book also does provide a review sheet in the front of basic grammar definitions, reminding kids the definitions of adjectives, nouns, etc.
My kids adore this book! Each activity sheet is a different fill-in-the-blank about Eid Al-Fitr. There are enough sheets in this book to keep them busy for the entire month of Ramadan, especially while some of them may be fasting and need to pass some time. As a mom and former teacher, I also love that teaching grammar has been coupled with Ramadan concepts and Eid Al-Fitr.
It's a perfect way to get them excited about Eid Al-Fitr while still learning educational content.
Age Group and Reading Level
I would recommend this activity book for kids in grades 3 and up–all the way up to middle school, maybe even high school if you have a teen who's looking for a written Eid activity. (I pray my own kids will still love doing activity books as teenagers!)
That's because many of the grammar terms are introduced in about third grade, and retaught year after year after that. So in order to complete these activities, even though a review sheet is provided, they do need to have a basic understanding of basic grammatical terms.
This is a great preschool and older coloring book about Ramadan.
It does include a checklist for kids good deeds ideas. For younger kids parents can read this checklist off to their kids. For older kids, they are able to independently read it themselves.
The coloring pages themselves are beautiful and full, with all types of things from Quran's for them to color, Ramadan and Eid decorations, to mosques, etc. It's a great way for kids to make all these associations in Islam and Ramadan.
Age Group and Reading Level
Since the book is mostly pictures that need to be colored, it is appropriate for any age. I find that both younger kids and my older ones love this book! The pictures are beautiful and will keep kids entertained for a while, as there's a lot of coloring space on each book.
As for the Good Deeds list, as I said previously, this would have to be read to for younger kids, but older kids would be fine to read it independently and check them off as they do it to help them take autonomy of their own good deeds and conduct.
I was very excited when I found this book.
Because it's a chapter book.
Not a difficult chapter book. Your high schooler could probably read this in 40 minutes. But a chapter book nonetheless.
My excitement came from finally finding a Ramadan chapter book! Because they're very far and few between.
Age Group and Reading Level
I would recommend this book for about a second-third grade reading level. It's a beginner chapter book, but still entertaining and long enough for kids starting to read bigger chapter books.
This is a great book for kids to not only learn about how Eid is celebrated, but how it's celebrated globally.
I love when I find texts that can help make my kids more culturally mindful, and perhaps even find some common interests in people who live elsewhere and speak other languages. And this book does exactly that.
It showcases how Eid is celebrated in other countries, while simultaneously highlighting the similarities among the celebrations.
The illustrations are also beautifully done, and is part of what makes it such a delightful and colorful read.
My kids love picking this book up again and again.
Age Range and Reading Level
I would recommend this book for preschool and up. The pictures are beautiful, and it's a great one to read with all ages. It will also facilitate a discussion about different countries and cultures around the world.
Oh, How I Adore This Book!!
If there's one book you purchase from this entire list, let it be this one!
This is the Eid book I always wished for as a child, and then as an adult, and was finally so happy when I saw it come out as a parent.
It's a play off the famous Twas the Night Before Christmas book. Except this one is all about Eid.
Some of our favorite memories revolve around this book, and I'll always cherish reading it to my girls on the last day of Ramadan, when we're so excited about Eid Al-Fitr the next day.
Reading this book at night is one of our favorite activities on the last day of Ramadan, and the last one we do.
Age Range and Reading Level
Every Age!
No seriously, who doesn't want this book on their Ramadan/Eid shelves or mantle?
Trust me, buy the book. And build those memories of reading it during the very exciting last day of Ramadan with your own kids!
#10 Once Upon an Eid
This is our newest Ramadan and Eid book discovery this year.
It's also the one I've been the most excited about this year, as it's one I've been searching for.
Now that my kids are a little older, and their reading levels more advanced, I have been looking for chapter books about Ramadan and Eid that are geared towards higher level readers.
This specific book is not a chapter book, but a compilation of different short stories about Eid Al-Fitr and Ramadan. Real-world examples for kids are given by the authors, and each short story deals with daily concepts kids can be familiar with.
I actually love that they're short stories, so that gives my kids even more of an author variety.
My girls have been absolutely loving this book! They've even been arguing about who gets to read it, that I contemplated getting them each their own copy!
Age Range and Reading Level
I would recommend this book for upper elementary and above.
I know that you'll find some delightful books for you and your kids to read together this Ramadan and upcoming Eid Al-Fitr within this list. From my family to yours, I wish you all a joyous and blessed Ramadan Kareem and Eid Al-Fitr Mubarak!
