The product is a Cares Harness by Cares Kids Fly Safe. And it will change your life for every flight from here until your toddler is a kindergartner.
The following post is about how a cares harness cane make flying with toddler so much easier and safer!
What It Is
When I first ventured with my then baby and toddler I researched all the different travel car seat methods for kids in airplanes and cars. The biggest hindrance to air travel with small kids in my opinion? Dragging a car seat through an airport along with the kids, their belongings, and a possible stroller.
My research led me to a device called a Cares harness by Cares Kids Fly Safe. A Cares Harness is a safety restraint belt created by Amsafe—the same company that creates seat belts for airlines. It works in conjunction with the seat belt on a plane to keep the child from falling forward during take off, landing, and turbulence. Using it helps prevent injuries that otherwise can’t be from the seat belt alone due to the child’s small size.
Since it weighs LESS THAN A POUND it’s much easier to carry than a car seat onboard a flight.
It’s also the ONLY airline safety restraint device approved by the FAA and therefore they are required by law to allow you to use it.
I’ve been asked about it countlessly by other parents on flights, and truly lost track of the amount of times I was grateful for its ability to restrain my kids safely in their seats during turbulence and landing especially. Landings can be rough the majority of the time.
Bonus: it’s helped keep my kids strapped in their seats during the flight, making for less getting up and moving around. They remain seated and do their activities making for one happy mama.
Age Usage
- About 1-5 years old, 22-44 pounds.
- There’s also a version for older Special Needs kids available should they need more than just a lap belt on a flight.
Installation Tips
- Adjust it to their size BEFORE your flight, so you’re prepared by the time you seat them. (Seating squirming toddlers and preschoolers is already difficult. I like to prepare anything I can ahead of time.) I had two harnesses labeled with each daughter’s name so I knew whose was whose.
- You’ll need to use the back of the chair behind you—which is where the person’s tray table behind you goes—to install it. I’ve NEVER had anyone say no or complain that I was bothering them when asking to pull down their tray table. A quick explanation of what I’m doing usually also results in praise in my parenting and awe in the device.
How to Install
- Open up the tray table of the person behind you. Once the harness is opened to its widest, lower it over the top of the child’s seat. Adjust and tighten it securely over the seat. Thank the person behind you and close up their table. The harness won’t hinder their usage of the tray table in any way. They won’t even know it’s there if it’s been installed correctly.
- After it’s been strapped onto the back of the seat, pull down and clasp the top harness over your child’s chest. If needed you can adjust the clasp straps to fit your child (this is the part that I mentioned before was already adjusted pre-flight.) Loop the airplane seat belt through the bottom loops over your child’s lap and voila, secure child. Enjoy your flight!
- Practice installing it before your flight! Go ahead and practice on the front seat of your car, a chair, on your child. My suggestion is to practice as much as you can. By the time you board your flight you’ll be able to do it quickly. Those squirming toddlers and unruly passengers trying to make their way to their seats won’t stand in your way.
Rana’s Notes:
- Cares is only approved to be used safely on an airplane. NEVER, EVER use it in a car to replace a car seat. It is not meant to do so and can result in serious injury and/or death in an accident.
- I used it with my youngest daughter when she was over 1 year old, but as she was slightly under the 22 pound weight limit at the time I would roll up a small towel or washcloth to put in front of her. You can use a blanket, kids bib, or shelf liner to keep them from sliding under the belt with their small weight.
- It’s also perfectly comfortable to be used with a neck pillow during sleeping and naps. In fact I found my kids slept better with it than without because again, they didn’t have the option of getting out of their seat. They’re used to riding in a car with a safety harness therefore using this was second nature to them.
- I never had issues with being allowed to use it on foreign flights either, considering the FAA doesn’t regulate every airline in the world. Nobody has ever told me not to use it on any flight, anywhere.
